Agra Fort.

I know, another magnificent fort in India!  How many forts and palaces can we visit?
"No more." begs Maisy.
Agra Fort is the largest fort in India. Luckily we didn’t start here or all the rest would not have been so impressive. The protection of this fort was astounding. In 1568 when the Moghul Emperor Akbar ruled all of India from this stronghold the fort was impenetrable. Horsemen with swords guarded the outer boundaries, the moat was full of starving crocodiles, the next inner circle had ferocious tigers roaming the perimeter and marksmen with arrows patrolled the upper wall. If anyone broke through these defences the only way into the fort was up a walled ramp where a massive 7 metre wide stone boulder would be released and if that didn’t crush you because you dived to the sides then the flaming walls would have burnt you to cinders.
Back in the 16th century when the fort was at its height of power India had the wealth of kings and spent big time. The walls were encrusted with precious stones, the carpets bejewelled with gems, the ceilings lined in gold and doors made of solid silver. The king’s peacock throne was 11 thousand kilograms of solid gold embedded with diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds from around the world. The king’s harem was an impressive 700 women guarded at each corner by natural born eunuchs.  Princes were woken in the morning by the sounds of the harem running through the corridors with tiny bells on their anklets. Our guide told us stories upon stories of the life here when Agra ruled all of India. He also told us that the history and stories of Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal are a mix of beliefs. Hindu history and Muslim history retell differing stories and legends but if you want to find some truth then only the English are unbiased in their recordings since their rule in 1612.

A real Ivory Tower at Fatehpur Sikri.
It's a shame the British stole the ivory.
