From the moment I knew we were coming to Vienna I could hear the music in my head by Ultra Vox and I must admit to loving the song. The problem is getting it out of my head as I find myself humming it a fair bit.

So one week in and we are all absolutely loving this architecturally beautiful city with it’s stunning skyline of church spires and ornate roofs, we just feel uplifted and invigorated by it. The weather has been sensational with long hot days and we have discovered that the Austrians really make the biggest effort of all the countries we have been to so far to indulge children and adults alike in having a multitude of parks and outdoor activities that are free for everyone.

We are living in the middle of the 2nd district that is moments away from the city centre and we have a park 5 minutes walk away called the Prater. It spans 6 million sqm and has something for everyone. Within the park we have found about 10 different play parks with wonderful equipment such as giant swings, flying foxes and slides along with artificial snow makers, water park, cycle tracks, dog parks, BMX tracks, exercise equipment, a golf course and a race course, a multitude of cafes and first class restaurants. Then just to top it off it has one of the oldest amusement parks in the world that houses the oldest working Ferris Wheel built in 1897. This is just the start of it, for a country that would be too cold to go outdoors for half the year in case something dropped off, you bump into parks all over the place.
Another fabulous recreation area much used by the Viennese and now us, is the mostly man-made Danube Island. To protect Vienna from flooding, a waterway was excavated parallel to the Danube and the dredged soil was used to create the 20 kilometre island. There are no cars on the island but there is a train station and excellent bikepaths spanning the island. There is a wonderful waterpark here that Charlotte and Maisy just loved and played for hours with Nico, the 9 year old son of the friends we rent the apartment from.
