Cromer.

During our stay with Andrea and Ron near Norwich I could not miss the opportunity to visit Cromer - The original Cromer, by the sea, on the north east coast of England. I had always imagined it a small seaside town with an imposing lighthouse as is on the Cromer School emblem back in Sydney.

It was a beautiful sunny day when we drove north and driving through stunning fields of red poppies we found out Cromer is known as 'Poppyland'.
Many notable authors have spent time in Cromer seeking inspiration from the beautiful country landscape and seaside vistas. No room here to leave a long quote so I will include a little limerick by Edward Lear.
There was an old person from Cromer

Who stood on one leg to read Homer;

When he found he grew stiff, he jumped over the cliff

Which concluded that person from Cromer.

Edward Lear  (1812-1888)
Albert Einstein spent time here in 1933 seeking sanctuary from the war.

We parked in the centre of town and walked through the cobbled streets to the pier. From the boardwalk there is an impressive view back at the town and the large hotels along the beachfront. The lighthouse can be seen from the pier but it is not so impressive and I will keep the image of the school's lighthouse emblem beaming over the black swan as my memory of the Cromer lighthouse.

The main attraction along the pier on this beaming day was ‘crabbing’. This seems to be a tourist pastime as the size of the crabs being caught was scary enough to give you a nasty bite but not big enough to make a crab sandwich. It was enough to inspire our girls to buy their own net and bait and have a go when we drove around to Wells-Next-the-Sea.

We stayed in Cromer for a pub lunch and continued through the streets peeking in the galleries and gift shops.  It was a long way from Cromer NSW and a long time before I visit again merely because of the distance and chance that I will be this way again.

Thank you once again Andrea and Ron for having us invade your tranquil home. It was lovely to see you. Hope to see you again along the road.

ThankfulLee
